Lev Kuleshov
Lev Kuleshov
The inventor of the Kuleshov effect. He was born in 1899 and died aged 71 in 1970. Throughout his life he created 18 films and helped establish the worlds first film school in Moscow.Kuleshov believed that the essence of cinema was editing, in his case the juxtaposition of one shot with another.
The Kuleshov experiment/effect
The Kuleshov effect is used to bring the audiences to understand the actors emotions about certain objects, the effects is used to bring the audience into the film more to get a reaction from them, he wants people to try to use the audiences emotions.
Kuleshov used the experiment to show how effective film editing can be. In the original there is a shot of a man with an expressionless face looking directly at the camera the scene then cuts to a bowl of soup back to him then to a dead child then him and then a woman on a divan. This was first shown to an audience that thought his expression changed every time the picture cut back to him although the clip was exactly the same being played over and over again.

Harry Potter Characters
Rubeus Hagrid is an enthusiastic and cheerful character who is always thoughtful towards others and relatively fatherly towards Harry. He is constantly giving advice to the students and he is always positive during the hardest of times. Many of the students go to him for help since he is a caring and helpful person and always making them feel welcome. His appearance can seem scruffy and dirty but deep down he is soft and gentle person.

Prof Dumbledore is a major character in series of films. He is a loving and wise man that helps Harry grow up. He is mysterious closed and secretive and you don’t find out about his life until the last few films after he dies. His style dress is quirky and interesting and suggests academic gowns.
Has a very big role in the Harry Potter films. His appearance is very magical and this is demonstrated by the style of his robes which includes stars and necklaces. He has a very mysterious and secretive character and you only really get a sense of what he is like in the last couple of films before he dies. He only confides in a few characters. The mysteriousness of this character has the effect of extending audience interest.
Is one of the main characters in the Harry Potter series. He is closed off secretive character but he enjoys teaching harry about the magical enters from book one and seems to think particularly fondly of him. Although he the loudest character in the films he is a very brave intelligent one who seems to put others before himself. He is a very magical character clothes and character wise. The robes that he wears especially suggest that he is a smart man and his wizard hat emphasises that he is a magical character. The beard also implies a certain level wisdom about his character and the colour contrast between his dark grey clothes and his lighter grey beard suggests that he is quite a neutral man- this could also reflect back on his fairly consistent personality.

Severus Snape is quite a major character with a dark and sinister appearance. He is shifty and deceptive, with an unsettling look. He is a mysterious character that keeps the audience guessing whether he is good or bad. His first appearance makes him look particularly evil with his dark looks. These being his robes, hair and physical looks (pallid and sallow). He is a dark and complicated character to understand. The way he acts suggests that he is shifty and evil person but nearer the end of the movies he turns out to be good. He seems bitter and cold towards the students he teaches as if not wanting to show his true colours.

Draco Malfoy and Snape analysis
Draco Malfoy
Draco is Latin for dragon, ultimately the ancient Greek drakōn, meaning serpent. The first part, mal, should be easily recognised as meaning evil or bad. It shows up in English in such words as malevolent, malicious or malign, and comes from the Latin adjective “malus” meaning evil or bad.
Blond hair is usually associated with sometimes a character being innocent in a film but usually the character is generally a dehumanized antagonist or a villain, I think this could almost be to do with the Nazi's. In Malfoy’s case it makes him look Sly, Strange, Aryan, Formal, Cunning, Deceitful, Clever, Noble, Villian and Smart. His slicked back hair signifies to the audience that he is Slippery like a snake/dragon so on the bad side in the case of Harry Potter. As his house is Slytherin this would make sense.I think the audience subconsciously pick this up and it seems to make sense to them.He look's like this because the director wants the audience to know that he is the villain as soon as he gets in shot.
Snape is a mysterious character that keep's the audience guessing if he's Good or Bad. His first appearance makes him look particularly evil with his dark looks his Robes,Hair and physical looks (Pallid and sallow) . He is a very talented man who specializes in potions and is extremely capable in duelling. His on Screen character is calm and silent but really he is insecure and unhappy.

Sorting Hat Scene
Setting
The Setting of this scene is in the Grand hall/ Dining hall, we are shown this by all the students eating and drinking the atmosphere is warm and welcoming with the torches and candles which help liven up the scene the scene is light and friendly.
The Floating candles show us that the castle is magical and the costume that the actors wear e.g Robes and wizard hats tell us that it is a film about magic. The big chair in the middle that Dumbledore sits at suggests he is in charge and powerful this is also shown through. The Props used look old and mystic to create interest in the surroundings also the sorting hat is obviously magical. In this Scene you can get only vague Idea of to what genre the Film is.
Costume
The Costumes are consist of Robes and funny hats characters also have long beards and funny hair styles.Students costumes are like ordinary uniforms but with wizard robes as well this tells us that this is no ordinary school it's a wizard school. The Genre is indicated by the characters clothing ( Wizards and Magic). When we first see Draco his hair is smartly combed back and looks shiny by doing this he looks very slick and evil so the audience can guess he's in slytherin because he looks like a snake his expression is also slightly evil. Snape is also looking evil, this is shown by his hair and black robes and expression.
Lighting
The Lighting in this scene is warm and bright with and the fire this gives a feeling of an excitement and a welcoming atmosphere. The way the lighting is used is really effective in this scene we are in a nice warm and friendly atmosphere by giving it a orange glow/tint however in other scenes it can seem cold, dark and creepy to get the audience involved this would usually have a slight green or blue look.
Characters
The new arrivals are clearly scared, they are in the center of attention and in the middle of the room while all the other students surround them this makes them look small. The Headmaster is placed in the Center of the staff table in a huge chair to show his power. You learn that the characters each want to be put in certain houses you can this from their expressions and actions.

Evaluation of Pen Chase
My Chase Sequence Evaluation
The BriefWe were tasked to create a chase sequence with three portals. We had to use three entrances and three exits one of these had to be eccentric portal such as a actor walking into the camera and then walking away in another location. We had to include a basic storyline for the sequence to make sense.
Planning
Due to creative differences with other teammates the planning went not as well as it could of however we got over this problem by splitting into two's and creating different plans then using idea's from each others storyboard to merge into a single story, I found that this method worked effectively, although I think our time management wasn't as effective as explained later.
Filming
Once again due to creative differences and Ideas the camera work was some moments a struggle until we came up with the system of taking turns and doing multiple shots for each others work and eventually learning to work together we pulled through and got our final result. Our ending result was defiantly different from our original plan, however we used the major aspects from the planning work and incorporated it in to our Chase sequence. Using a variety of camera angles and shots I think this made each shot is very unique.
Editing
The editing process was by far the easiest for me and Aaron since I took over almost completely (habit) and used simple but effective tools to bring out the best of these clips. I used the razor tool, colour correction (contrast) and key-framing for the audio. Although I did most of the hands on Aaron did help with certain decisions and what looked good.
Conclusion
If I was going to create a sequence like this a again then I would try more to co-operate with certain team members more and explained why I thought we should of used certain shots instead of saying we should do this and no explanation. I would of tried to get more film in to be able to give it a improved ending. I thought the way in which we planned our time wasn't effective enough I thought that we could of been out there filming when we were stuck inside planning, I think this happened due to the way we actually planned out sequence out.

Pirates of the Caribbean Analysis
The first shot is an Establishing shot to show the audience where the scene is taking place and that there is clearly a ship following them. It's positioned at a low angle (sea level) I think this is to show you how rough the sea is not to show the ship as threatening. The next 34 seconds consist’s of close-ups, reaction shots and a two shot was used at 0:33 when the characters are speaking. These shots are commonly used in dialog scenes to show the characters responses to the situation (They’re facial emotions). The desperateness of the situation is represented by how the ship crew are acting they are generally
The next scene starts with a tilt on a dolly moving backwards as if we were moving away from the two characters in the shot. The next shot you see is Jack looking through hole then his POV of the outside of the boat, you also see this at 0:17 when Elizabeth looks off the side of the boat these shots are used to put you in the situation of the character or to show you how they are seeing the situation. After Jacks POV you see a shot of all the barrels floating on the sea floating towards the Black Pearl this is to show us how close the Black Pearl is.
The next shot begins with a wide shot of a barrel hitting the hull of the Black pearl this tells the audience that the pursuer has almost caught up with the other boat, this starts to build up suspense. The next shot is Captain Barbossa and his monkey, as he pulls the telescope away from his eye the camera moves closer to his face on a crane this is to show you how he is feeling (medium shot to close up) he then shouts to his crew and at that moment they all start readying the guns and you then know theres going to be a fight. The next few shots consist of close ups and medium shots. The next shot is of the crew passing a cannonball to be thrown off the boat the camera follows the cannonball on a track, this is used for the purpose of the story. A good example of continuity is when the man in the orange shirt throws a box over board the camera is located behind him then there is a cut to a medium long from the water of the box hitting the water. Will Turner steps up to the side of the boat you then see his POV of the oars coming out of the side of the boat continuity is also used here when the shot changes to the other side of the oars but closer. Then a tilt is used from a low angle to show Will standing on a cannon to show him as in charge. The next shot used is an aerial shot to show how close the boat is getting the other and there isn’t much time left then it cuts to Elizabeth turning round, a close up is used with a shallow depth of field and then her POV of the boat from behind them this tells you that the characters think they’re doomed until Will comes up and suggests they fight. In this short section they uses close ups and reaction shots to show how the characters feel.
The first scene begins with a CU and a reaction shot of Gibbs to show us how he feels about the plan. The next shot is from the deck and gives the audience the impression that they are one of the crew members, the directors have used a Medium shot but you could argue they have used a POV as well. This cuts to a medium long of Will turning to the other heroes he looks at Elizabeth and there is a cut to a close up on her face then a mid-shot showing the two characters run off to help. The next scene is a two shot of two pirates loading the cannons franticly this is used to show the audience that the situation is desperate the camera then moves back on a track to show the dwarf loading the cannons with cutlery Gibbs leans on to the cannon and takes a sip from a canteen as he leans in the camera moves up to look at him when the canteen is snatched off him the camera follows it. The next scene begins with the camera behind Captain Barbossa it then moves round on a crane from a close up to a big close up. This then cuts to a low angle of Jack looking outside then there is another cut from outside looking at his eye then panning round to show us what he’s seeing. The next shot is a medium shot of Gibbs then a whip pan is used as he runs out of the shot and the depth of field changes slightly as Will jumps in front of the camera. The next few shots are close up and reaction shots and a medium shot these are once again used for scenes of dialog. Soon after this it cuts to a medium shot of the anchor being dropped as the anchor falls the camera follows it. Then it cuts to a close up on the rope thats attached to the anchor being dragged out into the sea very fast the camera advances forward slowly then there is an underwater tilt of the anchor being dragged along the sea bed.
A medium close up of Captain Barbossa which moves into a close up and reaction shot, this tell us that he know’s that they are up to something. Then a quick cut to the anchor hitting a rock this then leads to a sequence of shots with quick cuts to build up the excitement. You then see the boat rocking and then a medium close-up of Gibbs and other Pirates falling over and another shot of a table falling and then a close up of a medallion once again the camera appears to follow the object. We then go back to the shot of the boat turning then a two shot of Elizabeth and the other lady this cuts to a low angle of the wheel spinning out of control the camera starts to Arc around the Wheel. This same sort of method is also used in the next shot of the front of the boat. Then a long shot is used to show the boat turning round at a very steep angle to the build up the dramatic atmosphere. The next scene is a reaction shot of Captain Barbossa the camera moves towards him on a crane from a mid shot to close up, this was used to show the audience his reaction to the plan. The next shot is a long shot however Captain Barbossa head gets in the shot and it becomes a close up this really shows us his facial expressions continuity is used here as the next shot is a close up of the front of Captain Barbossa with a shallow depth of field. You then see their boat being turned round and a quick to cut to a medium shot of Jack falling over. A wide shot is used to show the ship going side by side ready for combat. Jack is then seen looking out of a hole a extreme close up is used then a POV. After this the atmosphere is built by shots of pirates shouting at each other. After this a series of close ups are used then a wide shot from the water of cannons being fired. Then the attention is turned over to Jack where we see a big close up on his face then him jumping away from the hole as it explodes, we then see a medium long of Jack before the end of the Scene.
The first shot is a close up looking down the barrel of a cannon firing, as if we where there. This then transfers to a spoon stabbing into the wood of the enemy boat ( to show power and humor) the shot used is a close up with a shallow depth of field the focus then changes to show a two actors one with a spoon in his eye. This cuts to a POV of the guy with the forked eye the as the eye is pulled the focus changes. The final shot is a two shot and the camera moving back on a track.

Chase Scene STAR WARS
In this Scene the filmmakers maintained our interest by using SFX effectively and having the camera shots change every few seconds. In this scene I saw multiple shots these include:
Establishing shot
Medium shot
Long shot
Close up
dialog
two-shot
Medium long
Pan
A transition was also used at the beging and the end this was a wipe transition that was commonly used in the Star Wars films. GreenScreen was also used however it wasn't too good compared too todays. VFX were used such as the laser shots and some explosions however most explosions were real.
There was also a multiple types of sound use in this clip such as:
SFX
Music
Ambient sound
Dietetic sound
Dialog
In the beginning of the Scene the shots are mainly Establishing,Medium and Long shots I think this gives the impression that you are there the sound also helps to add to this feeling.
Laundry list
This is me and Sam's Laundry list of shots, We could of improved this a lot more but we rushed and our final result was poorer than I expected. We accidentally did our following shot incorrectly instead of following the actor from behind we followed them with the camera in one place like the camera was attached to them.

Continuity edit
In our edit we had some good continuity edits at the beginning and right at the end. However because we filmed in the tuck shop and the vending machines ruined the sound thus cutting out some dialog. At 0:27 we made a mistake when filming and missing Sam coming back up from leaning over, this resulted in a jerky edit when editing.
Also it was slightly too dark in the room meaning it was hard to see the characters. Although we broke the 180 degree rule and others the final result was Good enough however we could of improved by filming in lighter conditions and planed ahead.
